On 1 January 2024, the septic tank grant was updated. The grant increased from €5,000 to €12,000 and the qualification criteria changed so people could get the grant even if they hadn’t registered their septic tank by 1 February 2013. Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems Grant

Homeowners can access three types of grants to assist with the maintenance or upgrade of their septic systems. These grants aim to ensure proper functioning and environmental safety of domestic wastewater treatment systems. Here's a brief explanation of each:

1. NIP (National Inspection Plan): This grant supports homeowners in the repair or upgrading of their septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems if  they fail inspection by a local authority.
It can cover up to 85% of the eligible costs, up to a maximum of €12,000.00. Homeowners must apply for this grant through their local authority and meet certain criteria related to household income and property ownership. For more information on how to apply, click here

2. PAA (Prioritised Areas for Action): This initiative provides funding for the provision and improvement of water services in rural areas, including support for septic tank maintenance and upgrades. In accordance with the River Basin Management Plan, It aims to enhance water quality and protect the environment by ensuring that rural wastewater treatment systems are functioning effectively. This program typically operates on a multi-year basis, with allocations made for various projects across rural communities.

Who Can use this grant? Your house must be located in A PAA. These systems are identified by the Local Authority Waters Programme Office who issue a letter confirming eligibility to apply. The homeowner can apply to the Local Authority for the grant.

3. High Status Catchment Area: While not specifically focused on septic systems, this grant supports sustainable rural housing initiatives, including the installation of environmentally friendly wastewater treatment solutions. Homeowners may be eligible for financial assistance to implement technologies such as low-impact wastewater treatment systems or ecological sewage treatment plants. The grant aims to promote sustainable development practices in rural areas, including the responsible management of wastewater. Click here to find out  if you ar
